Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 lbs boneless chicken thighs (or chicken breast)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp ground cumin
- 2 tbsp ground coriander
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper (adjust for heat preference)
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Pita bread or flatbreads
- Fresh vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions)
- Tahini sauce or garlic sauce for drizzling
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the diced chicken thighs with minced garlic, ground cumin, coriander, paprika, cayenne pepper, turmeric, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the chicken is fully coated in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for deeper flavors.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken to the skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, turning occasionally until the chicken is browned and cooked through. Remove from heat and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
- Lay out your pita bread or flatbreads. Add a generous portion of the sliced spicy chicken to the center, then top with fresh vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. Drizzle with tahini sauce or garlic sauce for an added flavor boost.
- Wrap the pita tightly and serve immediately, or you can cut it in half for easy handling. Enjoy your homemade spicy chicken shawarma with a side of fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal!
Notes
- If you have any leftovers, store the chicken and sauce separately in airtight containers in the fridge. The chicken can last for up to 3 days, while the pita bread should be consumed within 1 day for optimal freshness.
- Reheat the chicken in a skillet for best results before serving again!
- This dish can be served with various sides like homemade tabbouleh salad, hummus with pita chips, or pickled vegetables.
